Welcome to my third Sunday Snippet and Weekend Writing Warriors post!
This week’s snippet takes place shortly after last week’s snippet. Sarette just walked in after talking to Elwin again briefly. Her mom is at the table looking at her iPad and Sarette is just staring at her unable to speak, one of the very few times that ever happens.
Mom clicked her iPad off, “What’s up? You walked in with a huge cat-that-ate-the-canary smile on your face; now you’re staring at me and frowning like you are a million miles away. It’s a boy, isn’t it? Must be someone I wouldn’t approve of—” she tapped her chin a couple of times “—a biker; that’s it, isn’t it? I don’t approve of the ‘no-helmet’ law, so please wear one, okay?”
She smiled, but I still couldn’t say anything and was making her nervous so she changed course, “Listen, I sure sometimes it seems like I favor Mathew, but as soon as you get a date, I’ll give you fifty bucks, too … that sounded terrible; let me try again—”
“Mom!” I yelled to stop her from rambling and proceeded to do that myself, “It’s about Dad; I think it’s about Dad, Elwin said family, not Dad specifically.”
Mom looked like I had just slapped her and quickly uttered an apology and took a step.
She raised her hand to stop me and said, “I’ve told you everything I can about your dad…”
dun, dun, dun. (sorry didn’t want to resist)
I hope you enjoyed this week’s snippet! Let me know what you think in the comments below. Sarette is about to have a whole lot more life thrown at her, check in next week for more! But if you can’t wait until next week…
Seventeen-year-old Sarette has always thought of her life as average, even a bit boring. She does well in school, has a loving mother and a loyal best friend, Mathew. Of course, she has her problems as well—cold Michigan winters, a long-lost father she knows nothing about, and the lack of a boyfriend. She also has the vague sensation that she is being watched by some unseen entity, but figures that means she’s average and crazy.
Nothing could be further from the truth . . .
