Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors 12/14/14

Welcome to my 16th Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors Post! This week’s snippet takes place shortly after last week’s that you can find here.

Elwin and Sarette have moved to her house (by pulling the two crystals apart) and are drinking coffee at the kitchen table. Elwin asked what Sarette would like to know about, and she asked who her father is…

“King Roland of the Spirit Fey.”

“What or who does he rule over?”

“Well . . . everything.” He shrugged and set down his coffee cup, “In our world, Daearen; there exists a certain hierarchy. Each of the elements— water, fire, earth and air— is represented by a realm with its land, castle and ruling royal family overseeing the balance within it.”

“Wait, what about Spirit?”

“They have the same but they are the most magical and the only fey powerful enough to use magic against another fey. The Spirit Fey have ultimate rule of the land.” Elwin picked up his coffee and looked at me over the rim, “Your family rules our entire world.”

“I’m just going to let that sink in for a little bit.”

Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms

Seventeen-year-old Sarette has always thought of her life as average, even a bit boring. She does well in school, has a loving mother and a loyal best friend, Mathew. Of course, she has her problems as well—cold Michigan winters, a long-lost father she knows nothing about, and the lack of a boyfriend. She also has the vague sensation that she is being watched by some unseen entity, but figures that means she’s average and crazy.

Nothing could be further from the truth . . .

Daearen isn’t much different than the human world. Imagine a world where science is replaced with magic.

  1. Ah, discussing one’s fae heritage over coffee . . . as you do.

I adore the smooth mix of magical and mundane in this story, Emmy! 🙂

  2. I love that last line. I’m sure she needs some time to process such information. I’m glad she doesn’t tell him he is crazy and that can’t be true. Great choice of reaction.

  3. I like how the situation and tone is kind of light, but the information conveyed is life altering. It makes for an interesting contrast.

  4. I love this little snippet! I can just imagine Sarette, coffee mug held loosely in her outstretched hands:

“I’m just going to let that sink in for a little bit.”

Thanks for the humorous little image! 🙂

  5. I like the little explanation of the who’s who … and last line is perfect!
