Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors 1/4/15

Welcome to my 19th Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors Post! This week’s snippet takes place immediately after last week’s that you can find here. Sarette’s mom just told her she wasn’t lying she was omitting parts…

…Because we wanted you to have as much normalcy as possible, for as long as possible.
What your father and I had was a once-in-a-lifetime thing—destiny. We were living our life, our way, and on our terms—at least for a while anyway then, one day, everything changed.” Mom’s eyes glazed with unshed tears, “Roland said that he needed to leave because his father had died and that we couldn’t continue to be together because I couldn’t go with him. It wasn’t your father’s fault or mine; it’s that I am totally human, and only those with fey blood may enter the fey realm. He said he hadn’t cared about being king and planned to give up the throne so he could live here with me, but everything changed when his father died. A throne must have balance to be effective.”

Elwin chimed in, “If a realm in Daearen doesn’t have balance in all things, including having both a King and a Queen representing the throne, bad things happen here.”

“What kind of things?”

Elwin shrugged, “Tornadoes, flash floods, tsunamis, those kinds of things.”

Oh, those types of things…

I hope you enjoyed this week’s snippet! Let me know in the comments below!
Check back in next week for the continuing saga of Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms!

But if you can’t wait until next week…

Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms

Seventeen-year-old Sarette has always thought of her life as average, even a bit boring. She does well in school, has a loving mother and a loyal best friend, Mathew. Of course, she has her problems as well—cold Michigan winters, a long-lost father she knows nothing about, and the lack of a boyfriend. She also has the vague sensation that she is being watched by some unseen entity, but figures that means she’s average and crazy.

Nothing could be further from the truth . . .

Daearen isn’t much different than the human world. Imagine a world where science is replaced with magic.

  1. Aww, I feel so sorry for her mom. Sometimes relationships have to end for something bigger than either person. It’s so sad. 🙁

Great snippet! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  2. I’m really impressed with her mother—it’s so refreshing for a character to be practical enough to say, “Yes, I love him with all my heart, but tsunamis . . .”

    Very nicely done, Emmy! 🙂

  3. I’m right there with everyone else – feeling sorry for the Mom! It’s good to know the backstory (which was well presented, I thought). Can’t wait for more of the tale – great snippet!

  4. Nice (but sad) back story. I’m a sucker for “love will find a way” though, so I sort of hope that Roland can leave the throne and return to Sarette’s mother.

  5. “Tornadoes, flash floods, tsunamis, those kinds of things”
They’re lucky they aren’t on earth.
Those “things” are daily, cyclical, and our destiny.
    Nice 8!

  6. Heavy snippet. You’ve got a lot going on here & spell it all out clearly. Nice.
