Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors 12/21/14

Welcome to my 17th Snippet Sunday ~ Weekend Writing Warriors Post! This week’s snippet takes place shortly after last week’s that you can find here. What happens in between last week’s snippet and this week’s snippet does not progress the story (that’s why I didn’t choose it) but is a favorite part of mine. You can find that here if you’re interested. Now back to this week’s snippet, Sarette’s mom just walked into the kitchen…

“Elwin,” Mom said as she nodded her head in his direction, “I hear we have some issues to discuss.” She waited until he nodded back before walking over to the coffee pot.

“Coffee smells good,” she said as she poured herself a cup. “Why don’t you go and get the crystals, Sarette. I have a feeling they’re much more interesting now that there are two of them,” she spoke calmly, walked over to the table and sat down.

“Elwin, please sit down.” She motioned toward the place in front of his abandoned half-cup of coffee, and he cautiously accommodated her request.

I stood there in awe; I had never seen her so businesslike.

“Sarette—” Mom snapped “—the crystals?”

Without further hesitation, I took the stairs three at a time and when I reached the top I heard mom say, “Is there news of my husband, the king?”

Is it mean that I hope your heart just sank like Sarette’s did when she realized mom’s been keeping more secrets?

I hope you enjoyed this week’s snippet! Let me know in the comments below!

Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms

Seventeen-year-old Sarette has always thought of her life as average, even a bit boring. She does well in school, has a loving mother and a loyal best friend, Mathew. Of course, she has her problems as well—cold Michigan winters, a long-lost father she knows nothing about, and the lack of a boyfriend. She also has the vague sensation that she is being watched by some unseen entity, but figures that means she’s average and crazy.

Nothing could be further from the truth . . .

Daearen isn’t much different than the human world. Imagine a world where science is replaced with magic.
